Ease in Motion

Whether personal, professional, or existential, we all have to navigate uncertainty. For scientists especially, our calling is to delve into the unknown.

Yet while we may be taught how to optimize a protocol, we are rarely given a framework to stay motivated, healthy, and true to ourselves in the face of adversity.

This article offers that framework, one I call Ease in Motion and outline below.

ADAPTABILITY | Let go of the idea that you need to be at your peak performance level at all times. No one can sustain that! What’s more important are practices that build your awareness and ability to adapt.

ASYMMETRIC BALANCE | Embrace your strengths, weaknesses, and true interests. Our power lies in harnessing what makes us different (not being ashamed of it) and finding balance within those differences.

TAKE IT SLOW | One step in the right direction is more effective than 10 steps in no particular direction. Consistent, gradual steps will be more effective than speed for speed’s sake.

LAUGH | A healthy sense of humor keeps you humble and adaptable, and can put most setbacks in perspective. Plus, sometimes life (or lab) is just simply ridiculous!
